A great end to England…Salsibury Cathedral, Stonehenge and Avesbury!

England was wonderful because there were so many DIFFERENT kinds of places to visit, and our last day was really a gold star day.  First we went to the lovely town of Salisbury and its magnificent cathedral with the oldest clock in t

One of the most amazing features of this

church was the fact that because the enormous steeple was added after the church was built, the giant stone piers holding it up int he center of the church are BENDING!!!!

Aren't these tombs magnificent!  All inside the church.  Although we could not take photos, we also saw one of the original copies of the Magna Carta.  Way ahead of its times in its cherishing the rights of women, the middle class and the unfortunate.  Not that it made much difference in 1066 since it was rescinded, but it was a model for more weighty documents to come.

No mistaking this next series of photos!  Funny thing is, now there is a rope around the site:  when I was here in 1968, with almost no crowds , we could wander among the stones as we pleased!

But at Avesbury, a much larger and more dis-organized site, we could get right up to the stones.

A great day and a great way to leave the UK!
